What Is Their secret?
Rumour has it that the people who live on Greece’s most southerly island of Crete live longer than those in most other countries around the entire world.
Some put it down to “raki,” the local firewater but actually what is much more likely is their high consumption of locally produced extra virgin olive oil – nature’s gift……
Unlike vegetable oils, which are high in polyunsaturated fats and do a great deal to contribute to heart problems and have even been linked to an increased risk of cancer, olive oil is largely monounsaturated fat, which helps to lower the levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and stimulate an increase in the levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL).
Olive oil is basically the natural juice of the olive fruit and can be consumed when it is freshly pressed. Aside from the fact that it preserves all the vitamins and goodness of the olive, which is what gives it all its excellent health benefits, it retains all the taste and smell of the fruit, making it a much tastier and appealing option than processed vegetable oils. Whether for use in salads or for cooking, nature’s gift of olive oil is simply the best!
